Kill your darlings

Writing Skills for Professionals

"In writing, you must kill your darlings"; this is Faulkner's effective way of describing how professional writers learn to tame their egos for the benefit of the text. As professionals, writers start focusing on the craft and value quality more than vanity, most of the time, at least. This seminar is aimed at people that understand writing as a craft and want to hone their skills. Writing professionally in a language other than your own really does deserve the over-used epithet: challenging. The participants will train each step of the cycle of research, interviewing, copywriting, editing, subediting and the elements of style, then put them all together in a scenario designed to take them out of their comfort zone. The seminar also looks at the the pros and cons of using tools such as translation programmes,  online dictionaries and grammar checking software.
